Here's something I have been working on the last little while.  Modifying my rig so that it is completely off grid and tied with a self sustaining lifestyle on a patch of land in Northern Ontario.

We all hear of the doom and gloom in our economy and this has got me to thinking of the big what if??  After doing a ton of research on the net about what to do, one almost constant theme is to have a rv and a patch of land that is paid for.  Homesteading, frugal living, off grid and generate your own power, find/supply and treat your water.  Growing foods etc.

So I could take it down a notch or two, and not go to the extreme but still outfit my unit with the necessary equipment and food/water storage, to get through a difficult time, say a month or so.  I have wondered if any of the good people in the southern states that went through the horrific weather lately, if any of them had any plan of this sort.

I know when we had the big power outage some five years ago, I was okay, I had gas for the generator and enough propane for the fridge and hot water.  But what if it had lasted two weeks??

As it stands now, I am self suffecient as long as the gas station has fuel, and I have money in my pocket.  The grocery store is just around the corner.

Ever looked at your camping rig as a escape route or I lost everything and at least I have the camper????????  What if ??  What mods do you think will have to be done?????

I am new to the forum, but this is a subject close to my heart.  I really REALLY hope that revisiting this post, even though it is over a year old, will stimulate some discussion on the list.  This is one of those things that could make you very grateful for the time and money spent on preps should the need arise.

I do look at my rig as an escape route, and a temporary place to stay if a fire or earthquake eats my hours…but, I'm not sure my RV could be modded to boondock for a month or more…  (lightweight travel trailer)

But lets see, you are talking about boondocking on a plot of land you own?   I would look into commercial propane service.   Like the kind of 300+Gal tanks folks heat their houses with.   Plus a “bulk propane regulator” to step down the pressure so you can hook up your RV.

If your rig doesn't have a genny putting on your land plot could help a lot.

A septic system so you arn't limited by your black water tank size, or at least a nice grade and drainage spot to empty the grey water.

Storage of potable water if your RV doesn't hold enough.

Shade trees to cut down on the need to run electricity hungry AC.

None of that is “sustainable” for that you need to, you know, farm.  Farm enough to be able to trade for stuff that you can't grow.   Then your RV is more of a farmhouse that happens to have wheels :-)

This post looks a bit old but It's right down my alley.

I plan on using my rv for extended trips into the wilderness (3 to 4 months) and have been putting alot of thought into keeping it self sustainable or at least to the best of my ability. Some things i have collected for boondocking are as follows.

DC solar panels and upgraded battery bank. also have a hydroelectric generator if i am near a fast moving stream or river.

Rain water cistern with solar filtration system for when i am not near running water. ( i did learn to drain it before driving when i built my prototype)

Small home made portable wood stove and a chimney through window adapter. for when you get desperste for warmth and it stores easily in 2 pieces.

lockable overhead gun cabinet for when you are desperate for food.

tons on foon and firstaid, just cause i like to be overprepared.

A decent stash of seeds for whatever you would like to grow or what will grow in the location you decide to end up at.

I am not a survival nut but am very aware of how quickly things can turn so i like to have as much prepared as i can.
