Make use of your unused shower/tub

Make use of your unused shower/tub by installing a deck over it and adding plastic drawers for clothes.

Materials List:

  1. 3/4″ plywood, the size of your shower tub.
  2. 1×2, 2 pieces about 18″ long, with a notch in the center on the long side to make a cross.
  3. Hole saw, a bit bigger than your favorite bowling ball thumb hole
  4. 1 can of aerosole adhesive spray.
  5. Wood Glue
  6. Hand, table or circular saw, whichever you like.
  7. Screws, # 8 or #10 1 1/2″, about 10 qty.
  8. Felt, fleece or otherwise similar fabric to cover this project.
  9. Staple gun

I have picutres, but I can't seem to upload them.  If anyone wants them, just send me an email…

OK, so here's the thing:  You have a limited amount of space and never use the shower in your RV.  So far as you are concerned, that is about 4 square feet of useless space.  Useless until now.

I say that because I have yet to see anyone else do this, but that isn't to say someone else thought of this before I did.

My shower tub is a simple, deep tub (about 10″).  There is a lip all around of about 2.”  I cut myself a sheet of 3/4″ plywood, reinforced the center with 2  1×2s on there small end, perpendicular to one another.  This basically made a cross in the center of the board.

I cut each corner of the board at 45 degreess at about 1 1/2″ from the corner to ensure that nothing gets damaged in the corners.

Next, a hole saw to make 2 holes diagonally across from each other, one at each end of the board.  This is to be able to install and remove the deck.

Finally, I added a layer of fleece I cut from a dollar store blanket.  This was aerosole glued and stapled into place.  The blanket wrapped around the board by about 3 inches to ensure that the ends cleared the lip of the tub.  This was so the staples could not scratch or damage the tub.

This part of the project is complete.  Simply install your deck and start making use of additional floor space.  In my case, I went out and bought 2 Sterlite plastic dresser drawers, split them up nnd made a 5 drawer unit and installed it in the bathroom.  We keep all our clothes in there, so no need for suitcases, dufflel bags or backpacks!

The advantages:

- Make use of previously unusable space.

- Clears space elsewhere in the RV.  Stuff you previously put someplace else is now in the 'closet.'

- Additional storage for rarely needed / wet clothes under the deck.

The pitfalls

- Don't accidently turn on the shower.  Your clothes will get wet.  Been there, done that.  I fixed this by not reinstalling the shower head after the winter, and installing a close valve on the faucet.

- Makes it hard to use the shower if you need to.

- Drawers may slide open during travel.  Ensure you secure them closed.  We do this by piling other stuff we have in front of the drawers.

Enjoy!

This is great. We did the same with the upper bunk of our former TT and put one of the kids sleeping on the sofa.  She got too tall for the bunk anyway.  Both matts went on the bottom bunk and that made it a little nicer for sleeping.  The platform left by the top bunk only just allowed room for sterilite drawers to be slid up there.  The top drawer had to be taken out in order to access the stuff in there, but that was small potatotes compared to having things that need to be put away and noplace to put them.  Like you, I just used the top drawers for things that I didn't need every day.  Since then, we have moved from a 27' BH TT (no slide)  to a 32' 5th wheel with a slide and, in truth, I don't have more storage room, just a more conventional way of storing.
