adding 30 amp outlet to my house

Hi all,

I am planning on adding a 30 amp RV outlet to the outside of my house so I can occasionally use the AC in my  '99 Jayco Eagle 28' TT.  I have the proper breaker for my panel in my basement, and the proper outlet for the outside, and am getting ready to purchase the wire.  Due to the distance I may have to run the wire, I am going to drop down to a lower gauge….from 10 gauge to 8 gauge.  I was going to use 8-2 with ground, which is a total of three wires…..one black, one white, and a bare copper ground wire.  On the outlet end of my wire, where the travel trailer plug attaches to the side of my house, the outlet indicates which one of the flat spade holes is white.  I assume the other flat spade hole is the black wire, and the round hole is for the ground or bare wire.

Somewhere I saw in these pages someone reminding another member to be sure and use a four wire configuration…..a black, white, red and ground.  Were they talking about a 50 amp service where you are using 220 volts?

The 120 volt RV connection should be very simple…..black wire, white wire, and ground.  Right?

Thanks for any input.

Alex

Years and years ago I put a premade rv box with plug on the side of my house for visiting RVers.  It has worked flawlessly.  I just have to remember to turn on the circuit breaker before our guest arrives……..When we a going on a trip I pull my camper up to the side of the house and plug it in to save propane to the refrigerator.  I also added a cable connection there also…..I have a water faucet nearby…..the only thing I don't have is a sewer connection……

A few months ago I put in a 30 amp plug in a weatherproof box so i could use my TT and run the AC as well.  I put in 6 ga wire and the 4 wire loom (red, black, white and ground) so I could change to a 50 amp later if i needed/wanted to (I just didn't hook up the red wire).  The diagram provided by JeffTech was the same one i used and was invaluable.  Good luck with your installation.
