Mod Description:

This mod comes to us from ModMyRV member tomandalethea, otherwise known as Tom Lauhon, and is copyright with all rights reserved.

The two plastic pieces (spring retracting latch handle on the screen door, and latch catch on the exterior door) that come standard on most RVs, if not installed perfectly with each other, can make it difficult at times to open the exterior door. This can cause the screws to strip out from the latch catch to the exterior door. Instead of installing larger screws and glue when this happened to me, I did this mod for $5 and 10 minutes.

Mod Difficulty:

In the fourth picture, you will see the latch catch removed (see old screw holes) and reinstalled upside down with 3M VHB (very high bond) double stick tape. The reason to install this upside down is that the grooved part of the catch needs to be disabled for the mod, and the slight slope on the back of the catch is needed to push the latch handle down when the exterior door and screen are together. See picture 6545 for an example of what height to set the catch so that the handle is pushed down enough to keep the latch retracted in.

Now that the catch has been disabled, you need something to keep the screen door and exterior door sticking to each other while swinging open and closed. To accomplish this, I found that two magnets for $2.50 from Home Depot worked perfectly. They are 3/8 x 3/8 x 1 7/8” in size, and mounted to the screen door with a couple small tabs of the 3M VHB double stick tape (see the first picture).

The end result is the screen latch will work exactly the same with the door frame, the door works the exact same with the screen, and you no longer get a sticky feeling when opening/ closing either door.

ModMyRV recommends these parts for this mod:
Magcraft NSN0606 1/4-Inch Rare Earth Cube Magnets, 20-Count
Screen Door Latch

Hi. I am replacing my screen door latch as it broke off a couple of weeks ago. I have the same latch set that is pictured here, however I ran into a problem. After I installed the latch and the catch, and I close both doors, when I pull the door release for the main door to go outside, the screen door latch does not automatically release with it. What did I do wrong? I’ve stared at this thing for hours, and the old broken one and am trying to see where the two previously worked together, but I’m not seeing it, help!!

Not a very safe latch if you have small grandkids over. If they lean up against the screen door, they will fall right out onto the steps. I would not consider this mod if you have small children.
