Mod #18: Speaker Replacement

Let’s face it. Most factory RV audio systems have terrible sounding speakers. Sometimes this is because of the cheap stereo the manufacturer uses but more likely it’s because of the even cheaper speakers used. But this is easily fixable. Just replacing the factory speakers in their stock location without changing out the factory stereo can make a big difference in sound quality.

Mod Difficulty:

Most RVs have 4 speakers that are mounted in the ceiling, two of which are located in the living area and two in the bedroom (if you have one). If you have a surround system, you may have as many as 7 speakers, but the speakers dedicated to the surround system generally aren’t used by the factory stereo. It can be wired to do so, but that’s another mod for another day.

The factory speakers are easily replaceable. They are generally held in by several screws that are accessible after popping or twisting off the speaker grill. Simply remove the screws, remove the wires from the speaker, attach the wires to the new speaker, and reattach to the ceiling. Then snap on the new grill that came with the speaker. How simple can it get?

If you’re felling a little bit more mod adventurous, you can leave the factory speakers in place, and install the new speakers in a more suitable location. A storage cabinet or dinette bench end makes for a great enclosure and will provide deeper bass and overall better sound, even with the factory stereo. Just remember that when relocating the speakers, you have to get the wiring to them. Keep that in mind before you start drilling and cutting out new holes.

ModMyRV recommends these parts for this mod:

Marine coaxial Two-Way 6-1/2″ speakers 60 watts
JBL MS6200 6-1/2″ Two-way marine speakers
